Abstract

Purpose: The study is to examine care need of the elderly and collect baseline data of care needs and health status for developing health educational programs and nursing service satisfactory for nursing professionals.

Methods: The data was collected from 143 elderly people over the age of 65. Self-report by questionnaire were measured to admitted to settlement house. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson¡®s correlation coefficient, ANOVA and Duncan test with the SPSS/WIN 18.0.

Results: The average score of care needs for the participants was 2.78(4), Informed care need(3.12) was the highest. The average score of physical health status was 2.44(4). Among the 5 factors related to health status, Sexual life, Emotional health status, Social health status, Physical health status, and Bodily pain. Age, residential distract, educational level, spouse existence, monthly income were significantly related to the elderly¡¯s care needs and health status. The elderly¡¯s health status showed the negative correlation among physical care needs, psychological care needs and informed care needs.

Conclusion If the elderly keep in good shape, their physical health care needs tend to be declined. The elderly¡¯s care need showed the informed care need was the highest and physical care need was the lowest score.
